Training helps volunteers SHINE

Hey, if you’re looking for a way to help others, the SHINE Program has a role for you.

SHINE is a resource for Massachusetts residents looking for health insurance information, counseling and assistance. Its acronym stands for Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone. SHINE counselors provide free information to those seeking it and also screen for public benefit programs that can help reduce costs for low income households.

The confidential, free program is administered by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs and is run by both volunteers and employees stationed at area agencies like councils on aging and Coastline Elderly Services. Since the pandemic, SHINE counselors have also worked remotely.

SHINE is currently seeking volunteers for the SHINE Counselor Certification Training which starts in May. The training sessions will be held across 12, three-hour Zoom sessions that are held twice a week.

For more information, contact SHINE Program Regional Director Christie Rexford at the Middleboro Council on Aging at 1-800-231-1155 or shine.rexford@gmail.com.
