Teaching caregivers to care for themselves

Coastline Elderly Services will offer a six-week course this January to give caregivers tools to help them to also care for themselves.

We all need reminders at times about the importance of taking care of our own needs. Coastline’s course, called Powerful Tools for Caregivers, comes at the perfect time after the usual holiday stress, amped up this year by fears of COVID-19.

If you provide care for a parent, spouse, or friend, then this program is for you, according to Coastline which describes the program as “designed to help take care of you while you’re caring for a loved one.”

The program is provided free by Coastline and meets once a week via Zoom for six weeks.

Weekly topics include:

Week 1: Taking Care of You

Week 2: Identifying and Reducing Stress

Week 3: Communicating Feelings, Needs, and Concern

Week 4: Communicating in Challenging Situations

Week 5: Learning from our Emotions

Week 6: Mastering Caregiving Decisions

Powerful Tools for Caregivers begins the week of Jan. 19 and runs through Feb. 23, with classes held from 10 a.m. to noon.

To participate, or for more information, call Stephanie Gibson at 774-510-5209 or email her at sgibson@coastlinenb.org.
